About St mary's Mission

St. Mary’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Mission – Newcastle | Maitland

Welcome to the St. Mary’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Mission, Newcastle | Maitland, a vibrant and faith-filled community of Malayalee Catholics in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, NSW. We joyfully welcome all to join us in the celebration of the Holy Qurbana (Eucharist) and in sharing the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of the Syro-Malabar (Oriental Rite) tradition.

Our humble journey began in 2009, when a small group of seven Malayalee families, under the pastoral care of Fr. George Mullappallil MST, gathered to celebrate Qurbana and share their faith at Immaculate Conception Church, Morpeth. From these modest beginnings, our community has grown into a flourishing mission that continues to serve the spiritual needs of families across the Newcastle and Maitland regions.

Today, St. Mary’s Syro-Malabar Mission celebrates Mass and conducts community activities at two centres — Maitland and Morpeth — providing opportunities for worship, catechism, fellowship, and faith formation for all age groups.

Who Are We

How we Started

Our community began in 2009 with just seven Malayalee families under the guidance of Fr. George Mullappallil MST, the only Malayalee priest in the region at the time. The first Syro-Malabar Qurbana was celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, Morpeth, marking the humble beginning of what is now a growing and vibrant mission in the Newcastle | Maitland region.
